Exploring stability and freedom through the feet, legs and hips.

Module Grounding:
Feet, Legs & Hips

Developing precise touch and a deeper understanding
of lower-body pain.

Transform Your Practice

The feet, legs and hips provide the support from which we stand, walk and move. MER Grounding explores how these regions work together, combining fascia-based bodywork with joint mobilization, movement and somatic awareness to support greater ease and stability.

This module develops a practical approach to working with people experiencing sciatica, knee and hip pain, plantar fasciitis, ankle instability and IT band syndrome. Rather than following a fixed sequence, you will learn to observe how each person distributes weight, responds to touch and moves through their joints, using those observations to guide your sessions.

The work extends from the plantar fascia through the lower legs and thighs into the hips and pelvis. You will explore the relationships between these areas, considering how local restrictions, habitual movement and protective tension may influence the wider body.

‍Palpation, body-reading and movement assessment bring anatomy into practice. You will develop your ability to distinguish between areas that may benefit from focused touch, mobilization or movement, while adapting pressure and pace to the client’s response. Discussions around knee arthritis and hip degeneration deepen your understanding of how structural changes relate to pain and function.

The training also considers the personal experience of pain. Through resourcing, orienting, emotional awareness and somatic dialogue, you will explore ways to support clients who experience apprehension, bracing or emotional responses during bodywork. Consent, clear communication and respect for individual capacity remain central throughout.

Techniques and Integration

Practical demonstrations and guided partner sessions help you develop precision in working with the feet, legs, knees and hips. The training includes:

‍Deep fascial work with the plantar fascia, gluteals, TFL, hamstrings, quadriceps, adductors, abductors and tibialis anterior.
‍Joint mobilization and assisted stretches to explore range of motion and support comfortable movement.
‍Alignment and tracking practices to observe coordination between the feet, knees and hips.
‍Verbal support and somatic dialogue to keep clients actively involved in the session.Daily meditation, theoretical learning and hands-on practice provide opportunities to integrate these skills. You will learn to bring focused techniques into a coherent lower-body session, reassess the client’s response and adjust your approach as the work unfolds.

Grounding in Practice

Grounding is explored as a physical experience: sensing contact through the feet, receiving support through the legs and finding more choice in how we stand and move.

By the end of the module, you will have a clearer framework for assessing lower-body patterns, planning integrated sessions and supporting mobility, stability and body awareness. The emphasis is on developing skills you can adapt thoughtfully to each person.

This training welcomes bodyworkers, massage therapists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, movement and yoga teachers, alongside those interested in learning fascia-based approaches to lower-body work.
