Greetings to all fellow seekers of healing and self-discovery!
Have you ever experienced that moment in a bodywork session where a slow, deep touch hits just the right spot - on the edge of discomfort - and your body lets out a sigh of relief? Those tight knots in your neck, shoulders, or back, the ones that have been there for years, finally feel seen, touched with care, and understood. It’s like your body melts, and you think, “Wow, someone’s finally reached the core of this tension!” That’s the essence of Myofascial Energetic Release (MER) - a beautiful dance between deep, intentional touch and soft, grounding moments that guide you back to your body’s innate wisdom, right here in the present.
In MER, we’re not just working out muscle knot or chasing temporary relief. We’re engaging with your body’s soft tissues - fascia, muscles, and nervous system - to release pain, improve circulation and ease stress. This approach promotes healing by boosting blood flow, melting tension and calming the nervous system, which helps reduce pain and anxiety while enhancing flexibility and muscle function. But MER goes way beyond that. Let’s dive deeper!
The Science of Fascia and the Nervous System
Fascia - that web - like connective tissue wrapping your muscles, organs and bones - isn’t just a passive structure. It’s alive, dynamic and full of sensory information. Robert Schleip, a leading German fascia researcher, has shown that the superficial layers of fascia are packed with over 250 million nociceptors - nerve endings that sense pain, pressure and other sensations. These nociceptors area key part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls everything from your heartbeat to your stress response.
When we use slow, deep pressure in MER, we’re “melting” the fascia in these superficial layers. This process influences how nociceptors interact with the ANS, helping to dial down pain signals and release tension. Schleip’s research reveals that fascia isn’t just a physical structure - it’s a sensory organ that responds to touch, movement and even emotions. When fascia becomes tight or stuck (often due to stress, trauma, or suppressed emotions), it can press on these nociceptors, causing pain or restricting joint mobility. By working with the fascia, we address the root causes of pain syndromes, not just the surface symptoms.
Beyond Muscles: The Core of MER
MER isn’t just about muscles, bones, or ligaments - it’s about the whole you. As MER practitioners, we see the body as a self-regulating system guided by the ANS, which governs vital functions like breathing, circulation and hormonal balance. But here’s the thing: the ANS is also deeply connected to your emotions and energy. Ever feel like stress or old emotional wounds are “stuck” in your body? That’s because suppressed emotions or past traumas can get stored in the fascia, creating tension patterns that keep your nervous system in a state of fight, flight or freeze.
In MER, we tune into your unique story - your emotional responses, defense mechanisms and survival patterns. We ask about your medical history, childhood experiences, accidents, traumas and current life circumstances to get a sense of what’s happening beneath the surface. This allows us to tailor each session to support your nervous system’s natural ability to self-regulate. We use qualities like trust, loving presence, and gentle pacing (known as titration and pendulation) to release old patterns gradually, ensuring we don’t overwhelm your system. It’s like peeling back layers of an onion to create space for healing.
The Dance of Touch, Breath and Emotion
What makes MER so powerful is how we weave together touch, breath, movement and emotional awareness. Slow, deep touch meets those tight, guarded spots in your body, while softer, resourcing touch helps you feel safe and grounded. We guide you to breathe consciously, which calms the nervous system and invites your body to let go. Schleip’s research supports this, showing that fascia responds not only to physical pressure but also to the state of the nervous system. When we create a safe, supportive environment, the ANS can shift from stress mode torest-and-restore mode, allowing the fascia to soften and release.
This process isn’t just about physical relief - it’s about creating a safe space to feel and express. We hold space for any emotions that might arise, helping you release old patterns or limiting beliefs that keep your nervous system stuck in stress, anxiety or worry. By mirroring and supporting you, we help you rediscover safety in your body, paving the way for new postural alignment, healthier habits, and deeper connections with yourself and others.
Why It Matters
MER is about coming home to your body. It’s about creating a safe container where you can sense, feel and express without judgment. Through deep attunement to your emotional and physical body, we guide you to release pain, rewire old patterns, and rediscover vitality and ease. This work isn’t just about feeling better today - it’s about building resilience and a sense of safety within yourself so you can live a more connected, fulfilling life.
